Notes from the Field: Oct. 21, 2013

Hi Farmies! Hope you all are enjoying the beginning of our second to last week of field work here on the farm. This also marks the final week of the CSA season. It’s hard to believe that 24 weeks have come and gone so quickly!

As of today we have two end walls on the high tunnel, a door installed, and spinach, salad mix, braising mix, and arugula just beginning to grow. Hopefully this means we’ll have greens continuing to grow well into the next few months. It seems as though most of you have had your hand in some part of the high tunnel construction process, which is great. This is definitely a case of many hands making for light work!

Now for a brief wrap-up of what took place on the farm last week:

Monday
• Massive clean-up session in the basement including sorting through all of the onions as well as cleaning and storing the most recent butternut squash harvest.
• Began working on the end walls for the high tunnel
• Pulled the last of the Bermuda grass out of the high tunnel before seeding

Tuesday
• Seeded in greenhouse
o Braising mix (Ovation) – about 84 bed feet
o Salad mix (Encore) – about 84 bed feet
o Arugula (Astro) – about 84 bed feet
o Spinach (Tyee) – about 84 bed feet
• Harvested green beans and sugar snap peas

Friday
• Harvested for CSA and Tower Grove farmer’s market
• Disced and tilled the area to be planted in garlic
• Pulled apart garlic heads into individual cloves in anticipation of planting

Saturday
• Harvested for CSA shares
• Continued work on end walls of high tunnel

On the list for this week includes planting the garlic (always an exciting fall day on the farm), harvesting for our final CSA shares and farmer’s market, as well as a few other odds and ends in anticipation of the end of the season. See everyone this week!
