Notes from the Field: Oct. 14, 2013

Hi farmies!  The end of the season is quickly approaching with only 2 weeks of CSA and 3 weeks of field work remaining.  It’s hard to believe it’s already mid October!  You may have noticed that the farm updates are becoming shorter and shorter as the field task list also becomes shorter and shorter.  I have to admit that fall’s slower pace is a welcomed change after the busy summer.

Monday:
  • Harvested the last of the butternut squash (650 lbs. from this last succession alone!)
  • Weeded 230 bed feet Tyee spinach
  • Direct seeded 130 bed feet salad mix (Encore), 130 bed feet braising mix (Ovation), 130 bed feet arugula (Astro), 130 bed feet beets (Chioggia, Bull’s Blood), and 230 bed feet spinach (Tyee)
  • Disced in preparation for cover crop
  • Cover cropped area where shade structure used to be (rye and vetch)
Tuesday:
  • Harvested sugar snap peas, green beans, and wholesale order for Local Harvest
  • Weeded 230 bed feet sugar snap peas
  • Cover cropped below John’s field (rye and vetch)
  • Took down the first succession of slicing tomato stakes and stored in shipping container
Friday:
  • Harvested for Tower Grove market and CSA shares
  • Weeded 230 bed feet spinach and turnips
  • Disced and cover cropped tomato area (oats and vetch), and spring apiaceae area (oats)
Saturday:
  • Harvested for CSA shares
We’ve officially seeded the last of the beds in the field and will begin prepping and seeding in the greenhouse this coming week.  We’re looking forward to seeing you all out at the farm to enjoy these wonderful fall days!
