Our CSA season has started. It is so exciting to me to get to share the bounty of the fields with the people who have invested in us. I think there are few interactions that could be more intimate than trusting someone to grow your food. Each share of produce is full of memories for me. I remember the day we worked with apprentices seeding the radishes, learning how to use our new seeder, and showing folks how to stretch the row cover evenly over the bed. We just harvested the last head lettuce from the high tunnel – lettuces Matt seeded in a flat, all varieties together because we had lost the other lettuce starts, the February cold killing them in the 3 minutes it took to walk them from the basement out to the greenhouse. I get a whiff of the chocolate mint and it takes me back to mowing the bottom of the yard field and the smell when I ran over the mint patch.

I remember the shift when we started singing a song as we transplanted the beets to the tune of Row, row, row your boat:
Plant, plant, plant your beet
gently down the row,
merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Life is what you sow.
I hope that somehow all our customers can taste all these memories of dusty days full of song and rainy days when you worry your boot might get stuck in the mud whenever they bite into our produce!
