Ahh yes.  It’s fall! It’s that time of your when I get to the farm in the morning and the air is cool and crisp and everything feels “chill”.  All of our root crops are well on their well– beets, carrots, turnips, and radishes all look phenomenal. CARROTS look particularly great this year.  In about two weeks we will start a steady stream of carrot harvesting.  Come and get ’em at market.

With the cold weather also looms our first frost of the year, which usually comes in mid to late October.  When the frost comes, all the warm weather plants like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, basil, cucumbers and squash will bite the dust. Therefore, be sure to keep an eye on the weather in the coming weeks for below freezing nighttime temperatures.

Many of our earlier successions of warm season crops have already been tilled-in and cover crops have taken their place.  Cover crops like oats and peas are seeds we sow that will help us add fertility back into the soil.   This year we’re experimenting with daikon radishes as a cover crop in the garden.

And we finished making our beds for garlic planting, which will take place in a month.  Bam! Now we will occulate those beds to ensure we keep the weeds at bay before we plant and mulch our garlic.

Fall is the absolute best time of year to be on the farm.  Come help us out on Tuesdays, Fridays or Saturday.  Fridays we harvest all morning so those are particular fun! Here is our volunteer hours for the fall.

See you on the farm!
