This fall, the kids at Central Elementary in Ferguson, MO were given a taste of local organically grown vegetables as part of an effort to revamp their school lunch program.
100 lbs of zucchini from EarthDance was used in a “taste test” to work out some new recipes and see what the students thought. Turns out, kids CAN love vegetables!
In an age where childhood obesity is a serious problem, exposing kids to fresh vegetables at school is a strategy and a milestone.
You can help make sure this happens even more during the 2013 growing season by helping EarthDance become a more productive farm.
This year, EarthDance farmers-in-training harvested over 8,700 pounds of food from just 2 acres, and in a year of drought!
Today we are asking you to donate to our Tractor Fund so that we can grow an even greater abundance of vegetables in the coming years.
Now that we own the entire 14 acre Mueller Farm, a high horsepower reliable tractor is one of our greatest needs. Art’s Lawnmower Shop has agreed to sell us the regularly priced $21,400 Kubota B3200 with front end loader at cost, if we raise $18,800 by December 31st. Having a reliable tractor will allow us to moreeffectively plow, disc, and till the land.
This new tractor will also help us to increase our compost production, cover crop fields to build soil fertility and suppress weeds, and maximize our production. More production means more fresh healthy food for our community: not only our neighborhood’s school cafeteria, but in our Community Supported Agriculture shares, at farmers markets, and to local food pantries.
If 188 people each donate $100, we’ll reach our goal!
Everyone who donates $100 or more will receive an embroidered EarthDance baseball cap that says”Growing Food & Farmers” as our small way of thanking you! Of course, donations of all sizes are much appreciated – every little bit gets us closer to our goal! As always, this donation is tax deductible.
